Event Description:

Inspired by 17th Century French Salons – intimate gatherings where people would come together to exchange literary and philosophical ideas under the roof of an educated host – Four Chambers Press will be hosting a night of literary conversation, community – and of course, drinking – with Phoenix Poet Laureate and ASU Lecturer of English Rosemarie Dombrowski, PhD.

This month’s topic: Masculinity
How are men constructed in literature? What does a male perspective look like? How have representations of masculinity changed?

Meet us in The Reading Room inside The Rose Room at Valley Bar (Basement, 130 North Central Avenue, Phoenix, AZ 85004). Valley Bar is located on Monroe St down the alley between Central and 1st Ave. Parking is available in several public garages around the area and at meters down First Ave. Valley Bar is also a two-minute walk from the light rail via the Central Ave and Van Buren stop. We also recommend a bicycle.

As space is limited, we recommend arriving early to secure your seat.

 Every 2nd Sunday from 4:30 to 7 pm at Songbird Coffee and Tea house (812 N 3rd St, Phoenix, AZ 85004) Four Chamber Press and Songbird Coffee and Tea House will be hosting a writing group, the group is free and open to the public! If you are bringing work, please bring five to six hard copies in any style, genre or form (under 3000 words). Please note you do not have to bring work.

“A lot of times, when we’re reading submissions for the magazine, we find ourselves thinking, Man. Wouldn’t we love to grab a cup of coffee with the person who wrote this and talk about their work? We love a good writing group. Not only is it one of the most direct and effective methods we know to get better as a writer and improve your work, it’s a great way to meet people and build community.”

Inspired by the literary and philosophical salons of 17th century France, Four Chambers presents Get Lit: The Market. Every month, Four Chambers hosts a night of conversation, community, and drinking with Phoenix Poet Laureate and ASU Lecturer of English Rosemarie Dombrowski, PhD.

This month’s event will take place Thursday, December 7th, from 7pm to 8pm. It will be held in the Reading Room inside the Rose Room at Valley Bar (Basement, 130 North Central Avenue, Phoenix, AZ 85004). Valley Bar is located on Monroe St down the alley between Central and 1st Ave. Space is limited, so arrive early to make sure you can get a seat!

This month’s discussion topic is the market. Four Chambers writes, “Are you tired of writing query letters and tracking submissions? What does the publishing industry look like? What kind of pressures or influences does it exert on the artistic process? What are the effects of labeling and packaging for a larger audience? What is the tension or relationship between the artistic and commodity form? What does it mean to market one’s work?”

Four Chambers 05 Launch Party

Four Chambers Press is so excited to celebrate their 5th anniversary, and they’d like to invite everyone to celebrate with them at their launch party on Saturday, November 18! The party will take place from 7pm to 10pm at the Hive (2222 N 16th St, Phoenix, AZ 85006).

This month’s discussion topic is “Rupi Kaur, Instagram Poets, and the Politics of Craft.” Kat Hofland, rinky dink editor and poet, will be the guest host for the discussion. About the topic, Four Chambers writes,

What do we mean when we say someone is or isn’t a ‘real’ poet? Is ‘poetry’ an elitist and exlcusionary institution? What are the politics of consuming art within a larger cultural marketplace? Is Kaur’s poetry actually good? Who gets to define ‘good’? Who gets to define poetry? Is saying something is ‘good’ just another way of saying we like something or can it actually be good? Should we even be talking about this? Are we just adding to the hype? Does this have to be a good or a bad thing for poetry? What *is* poetry? What does Rupi Kaur’s success mean?

Four Chambers call for manuscriptsLocal literary publisher, Four Chambers Press is now accepting full-length manuscript submissions in poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction through July 31st, 2017. From their press release: Four Chambers Press, an independent community press based in Phoenix, AZ is now accepting full-length manuscript submissions in poetry, fiction, creative nonfiction, hybrid, and all other forms of contemporary literature through Monday, July 31st, 2017. We also pun frequently on the idea of being a heart. Namely: that we’re lovable; somewhat cheeky; an occasional flirt. But we also take the responsibility of literature and book publishing very seriously. We will bleed for this if we have to. Our hearts beat for this. We don’t care where you come from or what you do. We’re interested in building something that’s going to outlast us. We want to feel something together. We’re interested in you. Writers of all backgrounds and skill levels are encouraged to submit. #ArtLitPhx: Rosemarie Dombrowski – The Philosophy of Unclean Things

Phoenix Poet and  Four Chambers editor Rosemarie Dombrowski’s full-length debut of The Philosophy of Unclean Things, a Finishing Line Press publication, debuts on Saturday, April 1st, 2017 from 6 to 7 p.m. in the Rooftop Bar at the Clarendon Hotel (401 W Clarendon Ave, Phoenix, AZ 85013).

Dombrowski is the co-founder and host of the Phoenix Poetry Series, the founder and editor-in-chief of Rinky Dink Press, an editor for Four Chambers Press, and a lecturer at Arizona State University.  She has also been the Editor-in-Chief of the undergraduate journal of writing on the DPC, Write On, Downtown,  since its start in 2007.  Her works strive to showcase the myriad cultures and artistic endeavors of the Downtown community.

Opening remarks will be made by Four Chambers and Tawny Kerr, cover artist, with readings of the book to follow.

Copies of the book will be available for purchase at the event.

Weaving the threads

The Phoenix Poetry Series showcases some of the best poets in our community. This month in conjunction with Four Chambers Press, presents the launch of Weaving the Threads,  featuring readings by Megan Condeno Atencia, Kat Hofland, Sophia McGovern, Venita Blackburn, Rosemarie Jeana, Elizabeth McNeil, Elyse Årring, Jia Oak Baker, and Kelsey Desiree Pinckney. Their reading will be at Grand Central Coffee Company 718 N Central Ave, Phoenix, AZ 85004 on Saturday, February 25th at 7 p.m. For more information please visit the Facebook Event Page.

In response to the community art exhibition, House, Habitat, Home on the Downtown campus, 9 women writers — 3 students, 3 faculty, and 3 from the community — produced emotional and evocative work spanning the genres of poetry, flash fiction, and flash memoir.

Limited copies of the collection will be available for purchase at the event.
